Looks like the corner has broken off a cast iron cover in the grass verge directly adjacent to the road, leaving a hole into the space beneath. The manhole is on the southern verge of the Brighstone to Mottistone road opposite strawberry lane and near the corner of blind lane, pretty much next to the byway sign post.

This section of the road is permanently covered in mud by local farm traffic with no attempts made to clean the area. Wheels are not washed off when transitioning from very wet and muddy fields to the road. This creates a serious hazard for cyclists and motorcyclists in particular. Obviously wet winter not helping but road is constantly a hazard.
