Huge amounts of litter and debris, 26th February

Mon, 26 Feb 2024 19:47:35 +0000
54.853187 -1.53897

The A1 is the most squalid I think I have ever seen it! This is on your litter strategy; 'A network predominantly free from litter, without compromising safety and delivered affordably' Can you tell me how you are delivering a network predominantly free from litter when you don't clear it up anymore??? With regards to safety; you litter pick the A19 with zero hard shoulder and individuals from traffic management vehicles, but you can't do the same on the A1? Why do it so differently there but get such great results - yet the A1 is thick with dumped waste, thrown waste from cars and tons of stuff off the back of vans and trucks. You are also running a campaign about the impact on wildlife - but that is not going to pick up the litter is it? So the impact of the neglect from highways must be greater! What date is the A1 north and south being picked around here? Washington services is disgusting, never seen the road so bad after the slip lane leaving the services - that you are responsible for.

Fully van load of rubbish dumped along hard shoulder, 12th February

Mon, 12 Feb 2024 18:27:41 +0000
54.834143 -1.523322

I think this might be the result of an accident, however for about 50m there are dozens of black bags, packaging and all sorts of rubbish that has been dumped along the hard shoulder southbound between CLS and DUrham. There are skid marks on the road so I'm not sure, it is just spread a long way along. It is truly appalling amount of waste.

Litter and rubbish north and southbound on A1 from Washington to DUrham, 21st January

Sun, 21 Jan 2024 00:28:42 +0000
54.858738 -1.555702

Huge build up of litter along both carriageways and central reservation that hasn't been cleared for months. Undergrowth has died back so now is the time to sort it out! Trees and bushes thick with plastic, it is gruesome. I remind Highways of their service level agreement to the government - to keep the highways predominantly clearly of litter. It is appalling!!

Potholes on A1 northbound, 3rd November

Fri, 03 Nov 2023 16:20:27 +0000
54.840271 -1.525009

There are 3 or 4 potholes forming in the area I've marked on the map (A1 northbound carriage, left hand side of the left hand lane) My car bumped over all of them around 1 second apart today, and has done a few times in the last couple of months.

Grass has been cut in the central reservation but no litter picked for over 10 months., 28th June

Wed, 28 Jun 2023 17:36:48 +0100
54.841722 -1.52523

No litter has been picked down the central reservation along the A1 here, however as it hasn't been litter picked for nearly a year, the central reservation is now strewn with shards of litter, plastic, cones etc. A lot of it was blowing around the highway the morning after they had done it. Grass is cut twice a year and litter picked 4 times a year according to conversations I have had with you - however since this stretch has not been done since last July, having cut the grass it now looks awful. I am assuming you'll be doing three litter picks in the next 4 weeks into July to make up the 3 you have missed? Please confirm when you'll be litter picking as all of this is causing a hazard plus polluting the watercourses.

Building an sos area emergency refuge area built, 28th May

Sun, 28 May 2023 10:05:08 +0100
54.8594 -1.55578

Because this current SOS emergency refuge area is old and broken I would build a SOS area not for a smart motorway so there a space to get to the phone and a path to get to the phone. plus its very dangerous if you get out your vehicle people are speeding so its just a test if it would work, pass this idea on and see if it works,

Dead/injured domestic cat on hard shoulder, 30th January

Mon, 30 Jan 2023 09:44:15 +0000
54.856583 -1.549631

Hello, I drove between Jnct 62 Durham and Jnct 63 Chester-le-Street northbound about an hour ago (8.30am 30.1.23) and there was an injured/deceased black domestic cat on the hard shoulder which had either been hit by a car or thrown from car window. Unfortunately I spotted it too late to be able to stop safely. The local police and RSPCA were not able to assist at this time. Would it be possible for an inspector to check that area if they are in the vicinity as the cat may have a microchip. I can't be sure of the exact location but it was more towards the Chester-le-Street junction, and I think somewhere just along from the field of Herdwick sheep! Many thanks.

Litter here from CLS to Durham in both directions been building up for months. Never picked before or after the grass cut. Duvets, buckets, ride on cars plus all the usual mess, rubble sacks, ikea bags.....Not sure why it hasn't been picked for months - missed all the summer long days.

The grass has been cut but no litter picked. I don't know why they don't happen at the same time tbh. Seems obvious to do? Grass cut, litter is worse than I've see it for months! When is it being picked? All way between Washington services and DUrham on both sides.
