Deep flooding, 5th January

On the 16th December the rain was torrential. On driving from West Bexington to Portesham we encountered flooding at the bottom of Abbotsbury Hill and the start of West Street entering the village (B3157). There was one sign and the right hand side of the road looked passable. (There was no road closure of diversion in operation.) However the water was deeper than it looked. We continued through the water and immediately encountered a rasping sound coming from the front of the car. We assumed some water had got in the engine. A quick visual check didn't identify any obvious external damage. (We encountered a flood in the same place about three years ago and lost a number-plate.) However, as days passed the sound became more infrequent and we assumed any water in the engine had dried. Over Christmas we drove the car to Cornwall and it wasn't until we passed over a 'sleeping policeman' that we realised that the problem was still there. A check under the car revealed a piece of metal hanging only inches from the road. Concerned for the safety of other road users, we called the RAC who came and diagnosed the problem of the exhaust heat-shield hanging off, having been wrenched free by the passing through flood-water, and removed this for us, declaring the vehicle fit and safe to drive home. A trip to the garage when back at home resulted in some welding to make sure that the exhaust pipe was safely in place. The cost of this was in excess on £70. The flooding is clearly an ongoing issue and needs to be permanently sorted.

Amount of litter on the beach at Abbotsbury, 9th August

The litter on Abbotsbury beach is terrible. BBQ's cans, bottles and countless wrappers from untidy fishermen. Im lucky enough to live in such a breathtaking area but when litter and general lack of respect for the beach is seen it makes you ashamed to be from the area.
