Highway damaged, 16th April

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 00:28:20 +0100
52.6049 0.334618

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Roughly half way along Lady Drove and midway between Barroway Drove and Tile Farm. A vehicle, (possibly an agricultural vehicle), has left the road and entered the field at a location that is not intended for such access. In so doing it has caused damage to the edge of the road surface, making it crumble at one of the locations where the road is already subsiding into the field, (see photos). This damage is not far from the 'bend in the road' warning sign.

Deformed road surface caused accident, 10th April

Wed, 10 Apr 2024 16:57:15 +0100
52.606099 0.331519

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Look for 'SLOW' painted on the road just BEFORE entering the 40MPH speed limit for Barroway Drove, (heading from the A1122 toward Barroway Drove). On 12 02 24 partial subsidence of the road at this location was reported to NCC Highways, and allocated NCC ref: ENQ-686692-Z5Z6P2. On 15 02 24 NCC Highways stated that it had no intention of doing anything about this defect: (Quote) 'No action has been taken at this time but we will continue to monitor the problem -We have assessed that the defect does not currently meet our intervention criteria. We will continue to monitor as part of normal scheduled inspections' (Unquote) It came as no surprise to anyone familiar with the condition of this awful road that on Monday, 08 04 24, a car driven by someone who was unfamiliar with the condition of this awful road, ended up in the ditch, (see photos) for the following reason: Where the edge of the road is subsiding into the ditch it has caused a ridge to form in the road surface, which can snatch to the left, the steering of any vehicle caught by it, toward, or as in this case, into the ditch. Those who know this road will take to the centreline or even to the opposite side to avoid this danger. Fortuitously, this was not a fatal accident. Please repair this dangerous defect before another, possibly more statistically-significant accident occurs here.

Road subsiding into deep ditch, 12th February

Mon, 12 Feb 2024 23:50:50 +0000
52.606099 0.331519

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Look for 'SLOW' painted on the road just BEFORE entering the 40MPH speed limit for Barroway Drove, (heading from the A1122 toward Barroway Drove). At the left side of the road, where 'SLOW' has been painted on the road, the edge of the highway is subsiding toward the ditch/drain which runs alongside the road. Look too for a rut in the verge beside the subsiding section, where an HGV recently left the road and almost ended up in the ditch. Please see attached photos. Lady Drove was partly closed earlier this month for much-needed repair work to similar defects, but this section was missed, despite having been previously marked by NCC for repair. A disproportionate number of HGVs use this feeble road, which probably goes a long way to explaining this subsidence.

A1122. Road surface disintegrating, 9th February

Fri, 09 Feb 2024 16:37:52 +0000
52.592355 0.342364

A1122 Near Salters Lode. Eastbound, leaving Salters Lode and heading toward Downham Market, there is a patch of road (Eastbound track), where the surface is disintegrating and is very rough. It is a particular danger to motorcyclists. Sorry, I cannot provide a photo, it is not a safe place to stop, but the defect can be easily found from this description.

A1122 flooded again due to blocked gully, 9th February

Fri, 09 Feb 2024 16:29:46 +0000
52.599575 0.362182

This is a recurring defect. This gully was cleared fairly recently but it has blocked yet again. A1122 at junction with St John’s Way, Downham Market. Drain/gully in the centre of the roundabout, directly opposite the A1122 exit with the level crossing, is blocked or slow running, causing the roundabout to flood whenever there is rainfall. SEE PHOTO. Often, about half the width of the road floods, as in the photo, but in heavy rain the entire width of the road can flood. Being on a roundabout, this is a serious hazard, particularly to motorcycles.

Pothole has returned, again., 9th January

Tue, 09 Jan 2024 15:58:00 +0000
52.601399 0.34927

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Toward the A1122 end of Lady Drove, very close to the 40mph/NSL signs, (near Poplar Farm). This area has been repeatedly reported to NCC Highways because the road is collapsing and has become dangerous as a result. Vehicles trying to avoid the centre of the road where the degradation is at its worst, take to the edges of the road. As a result of this, a previously patched pothole at the edge of the road has again opened up into deep pothole. A further danger is presented by the lack of drainage at this location, so that any rainfall causes the formation of a large puddle which then hides the presence of this, significant pothole.

Large, deep and jagged pothole LD, 21st November

Tue, 21 Nov 2023 15:53:51 +0000
52.601967 0.347815

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Just outside the 40mph speed limit at the A1122 end of Lady Drove. At the area of prolonged subsidence of the entire road width, the edge of the road is often under water and as a result it keeps disintegrating. Once again a large pothole with jagged edges has appeared here, doubtless exacerbated by the number of HGVs that are using the road. As you can see from the photos this area has been repaired several times before, and is now, once again, in need of urgent attention.

Road subsiding at its edges, 13th November

Mon, 13 Nov 2023 15:53:13 +0000
52.601172 0.352039

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Between junction with Black Drove and the end of Lady Drove, (junction with A1122). The edges of Lady Drove are subsiding badly, (both sides), into either the ditch or the field at the side of the road, (both of which are lower than the road itself). Please refer to attached photos. This report is only about that specific part of Lady Drove, but in practice similar subsidence is affecting many sections of Lady Drove. Traffic is increasingly being forced into using the middle of the road for fear of grounding*, (in the case of normal cars), or overbalancing, (in the case of HGVs** and motorcycles). * There are regularly new scrape marks on the road surface from where this has happened. **Numerous HGVs use this road daily. This situation has been reported to NCC Highways several times, (not just by me), and has been consistently ignored or dismissed, often with complacent and sarcastic comments, by whomever is responsible for this area, despite the obvious, present and increasing danger it presents to road users.

Edges of road subsiding into fields/ditches, 7th November

Tue, 07 Nov 2023 18:54:45 +0000
52.606028 0.332256

Lady Drove, between Downham Market and Barroway Drove. This report is shown at one location only, but it applies to various stretches of Lady Drove along its entire length. The edges of the road have, for some time been sinking into the fields/ditches that run beside the road, but are at a lower level than the road. In some places NCC Highways had marked the section for repair, but only about one third of those identified for attention actually had any. The markings on the remaining sections have been all but worn away by passing traffic, so are mainly no longer visible. In recent weeks these sections of the road have suddenly become much worse, so that cars now have to straddle the centre line of the road to avoid the subsided sections and to avoid bottoming out on the ridge caused by the subsidence. This sudden increase in degradation has coincided with two factors: 1. The sugar beet harvest, and the numerous HGVs that use this feeble road to take the crop to Wissingon sugar factory. 2. Lady Drove is currently signposted as a diversion route while the bridge at Stow Bridge is closed for the recently discovered need of urgent and substantial repairs. I have attached three images to try to illustrate the situation, but it is very difficult to convey a three dimensional concept with a two dimensional image. Keen cyclists are still using this road even as we enter Winter, and they are being forced into the middle of the road as they cannot ride safely near the edges. This seems to also apply to motorcyclists. The road surface has been further damaged during the recent sugar beet harvesting, in the process of which heavy mud deposits, some as big as shoe boxes, have been strewn along the road and then 'removed' by the harvesting contractor using a 'teleporter' with a bucket attached to its jib. This bucket was then scraped along the road surface to pick up what mud it could. You will see scrape marks (and other damage) on the road surface (and in two of the attached photos), which were caused by this practice. Lady Drove has long been a difficult road as a result of neglect of its maintenance, but is now downright dangerous, especially in view of the increased traffic volume due to the diversion. A proper repair is needed to the road, but before that happens some form of traffic management is urgently needed to avoid an accident, (one of the attached photos shows where a lorry almost ended up in the ditch just a few days ago).

Heavy mud deposits on the highway, 26th October

Thu, 26 Oct 2023 09:30:05 +0100
52.603229 0.339184

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Roughly half the length of Lady Drove, between the area of Tile Farm and the junction of Lady Drove with 'The Drove' (aka Barroway Drove). There are thick deposits of mud on the highway, much of which has become compressed into the surface by the passage of numerous HGVs, (see photo). Those responsible for creating this danger are in the vicinity but are making no attempt to mitigate this situation. It is deeply unpleasant for those driving cars along this road and potentially lethal to vulnerable road users, particularly motorcyclists, especially as rain is now falling and making it all even more slippery as a result. Your rapid attention to this matter will be appreciated, (Ideally by 'reminding' those who have caused it that they have a legal obligation to keep the highway clear of this danger, and then ensuring that they comply with that obligation).

Violent undulations and sinkage of road surface, 14th September

Thu, 14 Sep 2023 18:02:55 +0100
52.601576 0.34912

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Near the 40MPH speed limit signs at the A1122 end of Lady Drove. Once again I must report to NCC Highways the prolonged, dangerous condition of Lady Drove at this location. As previously mentioned several times over the years, the road surface here is collapsing and is subject to a number fo violent undulations, not all of which can be easily shown in a photograph. This situation has suddenly grown even worse than usual with vehicles regularly grounding out as they enter the depths of the various undulations, yet still nothing has been done about this situation, NOT EVEN SO MUCH AS 'RAMP AHEAD' WARNING SIGNS. Previous NCC references to this precise location include, (but are certainly not limited to): Enq-534915-z3x8m0, ENQ-555204-W9Z1T0, ENQ-577607-F9H8N5, ENQ-591697-V5P3T2 Please attend to this problem as a matter of urgency, along with the rest of Lady Drove which is increasingly replicating a Moonscape as it collapses at many places along its route. Thank you.

Pothole. 700mm diameter, 3rd August

Thu, 03 Aug 2023 23:57:20 +0100
52.60176 0.348858

Lady Drove, Downham Market. Toward the A1122 end of Lady Drove, very close to the 40mph/NSL signs, (near Poplar Farm). This area has been repeatedly reported to NCC Highways because the road is collapsing and has become dangerous as a result. Vehicles trying to avoid the centre of the road where the degradation is at its worst, take to the edges of the road. As a result of this, a previously patched pothole at the edge of the road has again opened up into deep pothole, now 700mm in diameter. Ordinarily, at the edge of the road it would not be a major issue, but in this case, because of the continued failure to repair the road properly, it is very much an issue, and in need of urgent attention. Initially reported to NCC on 09 09 22, 11 10 22 & 03 01 23 - (repaired with cold fill 13 01 23). Pot hole then reappeared and reported to NCC 30 05 23, since when no action has been taken and the pothole has been left to grow larger and deeper. A further danger is presented by the lack of drainage at this location, so that any rainfall causes the formation of a large puddle which then hides the presence of this, by now dangerous pothole.

Speed limit sign rusted and toppled, 25th May

Thu, 25 May 2023 18:56:18 +0100

Lady Drove, Barroway Drove, (near the Anglian Water pumping station). One of the 40MPH speed limit signs at the edge of the road has fallen over, because its post has rusted through. This was originally reported to NCC highways on 13 03 23 and allocated NCC ref: ENQ-620385-Q8T4W8. In your reply at the time, NCC stated: "This problem has already been reported and action identified to resolve the issue......... Any additional comments the Highways Officer has made relating to this enquiry will be displayed below: Issued to contractor last week" There has been no remedial action taken whatsoever, and the post was recently dragged from its resting place on the verge, during your verge cutting, (see image attached), leaving two rusty and jagged edges at the roadside. Please attend to this as a matter of urgency. Thanks.
