Dangerous condition of A683, 3rd July

My wife and I regularly travel along the A583 and have done for 7 0r 8 years. When travelling in the direction of Kirkby Stephen from Sedbergh there are three places on the side of the road, where part of the carriageway has fallen away, in one case, dangerously so. These three sections of the road have been like this for over two years and with the lack of maintenance and/or repairs the road is deteriorating rapidly. The three sections of the road concerned start about 200/300 metres past the Cross Keys Temperance Hoteland the other two sections are within half a mile from the first road damage. When driving on this road, towards Kirkby Stephen, I have been forced to the nearside edge of the road by oncoming traffic and have been very close to my nearside wheel going into the deep hole. Had this happened, my vehicle would have toppled over into a deep gully, such is the depth of the hole. The resulting damage to my vehicle would be have been considerable. However, vehicles can be replaced. Injuries from such a crash would be considerable if not fatal. Not only would the authority be responsible for recompense in respect of any vehicle but would have to meet potentially serious personal injuries or death claims, which would considerably exceed the coat of repairing and making safe this road. I cannot ephasise enough how dangerous this road is and it is definitely an accident in waiting. I realise that there are financial restraints but these restraints do not override the safety of the general public. I have taken photographs of the three stretches of the road which are affected. I will keep these photographs until I see some action to remedy these dangerous places. I realise this will take a little time to organise but should no action be taken within a reasonable period of time, then I will contact my MP and the Minister for Transport. If there is no action after that then I reserve the right to forward the photographs to a National Newspaper, with my comments. Today, when travelling from Sedbergh to Kirkby Stephen, I stopped at the most dangerous part of the road because a traffic cone had been swept of the road. I recovered the cone and placed it in a position to offer greater warning to motorists. The cone was damaged but I managed to make it serviceable. This was dangerous act on my part but I felt that there is no one who cares about road users or health and safety. I would hope that a senior council employee would contact me over this problem so that I can be assured that some action will be taken.
