Unauthorised work to steep banks, 21st January
Howe Lane was been closed since Friday 19th Jan 2024 for work on a burst pipe. A resident has taken it upon himself to 'sort out' the banks, passing bays and widen the road, using his digger, excavating soil, making the very high bank unstable, containing many trees, copious loose soil, blocking access for water to run into the drains and rendering the roads practically impassable with a very thick layer of compacted soil ontop of it, soon to turn to river of mud with inevitable rain. This needs urgent attention please. Firstly it should not be allowed to happen and I believe this zone is a protected area. I do understand his frustration at no action from the council on these matters previously, eg. blocked drains, and ditches, no maintenance, need I go on. Many thanks

Damage to passing places and banks, 21st January
Whilst Howe Lane has been closed for water leak issue, someone has caused serious damage to the banks and passing places down the lane on the evenings of 19 and 20 January. The banks are now loose soil and unsafe. The lane is covered in mud which will block the drains when we have any rain. This now needs urgent professional rectification work to make the lane safe for all the residents, motorists, pedestrians and horse riders who use this lane on a regular basis.

Alterations to a Protected Lane, 21st January
Alterations have been carried out to the banks and vegetation to Howe Lane which I understand is a protected lane. It’s made the banks even more unstable and extremely susceptible to landslides and the trees coming down as the roots have been disturbed. This is now dangerous to residents, walkers and horse riders who use the lane. They’ve also widened the lane which will entice traffic to increase there speed up the lane.

Damage to steep sidings on protected lane, 21st January
Howe Lane is current closed for repair of a water main, but in addition to this, the very steep earth sides of the sunken lane have been scraped away in the last couple of days leaving bare sandy spoil at an even steeper angle -resulting in significant risk for catastrophic land slip including more trees which could be a danger to vehicles, horse riders and pedestrians unless competed to a professional standard urgently.

Unauthorised alterations to protected lane, 21st January
A neighbour on Howe Lane has been making alterations to this protected lane (UTTlane145). He has widened the existing lane, thus eroding already unstable banks either side of this narrow lane. This causes a potential land slip issue which could be hazardous to both vehicles and pedestrians.

Unauthorised exactions by neighbour with his digger, 21st January
Another resident of Howe Lane has been excavating the embankments on Howe Lane from the Great Sampford side up the hill of the Lane. As residents we are very concerned that this has undermined the footings of the embankments and could cause a collapse making it unsafe to all that use it for travel and leisure pursuits. Passing places were filled in which are needed on the Lane and an awful lot of soil has been excavated from the sides of the Lane.
