The Paulsgrove housing estate was built in the 1950s to accommodate Portsmouth's post-war population boom, and today the area is home to a mix of social housing and private homes. It is considered to be one of the most deprived areas in Hampshire, with one of the highest rates of children in poverty in the south of England.

The area has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with a growing number of shops and businesses opening in recent years, particularly along Lakeside Road. The area is also home to the Paulsgrove Shopping Centre, which opened in 2007, and the university's Centre for Life Studies which opened in 2008.

Paulsgrove has excellent transport links, with a regular bus service and a light rail line (tray) connecting the area to Portsmouth City Centre and Southsea. The area is also served by a network of roads, making it easy to access other areas of the city.

Education is also well provided for in the area, with several primary schools in the area, including St. Jude's Community Primary School, Grove Primary School and Withdal Primary School. The area is also home to the City of Portsmouth Boys School, a secondary school with a sixth form.

The area is home to several parks, including Paulsgrove Recreation Ground, Paulsgrove Family Park and King George's Playing Field. The area also features several churches, including St. Mark's Church, St. John the Baptist Church and All Saints Church.
