Ex16 postcode district is made up of two postcode areas, Ex1 and Ex4; the area begins in the south-west of Exeter, covering the suburb of Exwick, then west past Rockbeare, Talaton and Woodbury before reaching Whimple and then onwards to Copplestone. The Ex16 postcode area also extends east into the city centre of Exeter, with postcodes covering both the University of Exeter and Queen Street, as well as various other city centre locations.

Ex16 is a mainly rural postcode district, stretching 38.43 km2 across parts of Devon, and includes the villages of Rockbeare, Talaton, Woodbury, Whimple and Copplestone. Although Ex16 postcode district encompasses a large rural area, much of the district is within easy commuting distance of the city centre of Exeter, as well as the University of Exeter.

In terms of transport links, Ex16 postcode district is quite well-connected, with the M5 motorway running close by, as well as the A30, which links Exeter to Cornwall. Rail access is also available from Exeter St Thomas, Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids. Furthermore, Exmouth railway station is situated just outside the Ex16 area, providing direct services to London, Cornwall, and the rest of Devon.

In terms of nearby attractions, Ex16 postcode district provides convenient access to both the countryside and city life. Exeter city centre is home to some of Devon's best restaurants, bars, and cultural attractions, including Exeter Cathedral, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, and Exeter's quayside area. Further out in the countryside, the National Trust's Killerton Estate is situated nearby, as is Woodbury Common and the extensive Spiltsford Woods.
