The postcode district of S6 takes its name from the post town of Sheffield. The area is an affluent residential area with close to 46,000 inhabitants as of 2011. It has a high level of employment, with 3.2% of the population aged 16 to 74 being in full-time education according to the 2011 census.

The S6 postcode is a culturally diverse area and home to numerous faith communities. There are numerous green spaces within the area and local galleries, museums and theatres are popular attractions. The area is also known for its parkland, with several notable parks such as Hillsborough Park, Graves Park and Highfields Park.

The area has excellent transport links. It is close to the M1 motorway and has a number of transport links such as bus and train services that connect it to surrounding areas and the rest of the UK. There are a number of shopping complexes in the area, including Hillsborough Shopping Centre, Ecclesall Shopping Centre, Highfield Shopping Centre and Fox Valley Shopping & Leisure Centre.

In the area, there is a thriving hospitality sector – from independent cafés to pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. There is an abundance of places to eat and drink, from gastropubs to Indian and Chinese restaurants, pubs and bistros. There are numerous leisure and recreational activities available within the S6 postcode, such as golf courses, climbing centres, riding schools and leisure centres.

The area also has a strong and vibrant cultural life, with numerous music venues, events and festivals held throughout the year. These include the annual High Green Arts Festival and prominent theatre groups such as the New Crucible Studio. There are the Kelham Island, Sheffield Peace Gardens, City Hall, Mappin Art Gallery and the Millennium Gallery; all of which are popular attractions.

Finally, the S6 postcode is home to a number of sports clubs and Sheffield Wednesday FC is a prominent team worn by locals across the area. The area has several professional football teams in the EFL Championship, notably Sheffield United.
