Road Rage Hot Spot - see text below, 25th July

Sat, 25 Jul 2020 13:37:50 +0100
51.269789 1.060615

Frequent occurrences of road rage involving motorists turning right off the south-westbound A28 onto the slip road onto the A2, caused by a combination of inadequately-aimed traffic light sensors and very faded road markings with reference to the lane for traffic wanting to turn right onto the A2 slip road. The vehicle sensor(s) for detecting vehicles waiting to turn right doesn’t look far enough back, and thus doesn’t see the car at the front of the queue waiting to turn unless it has drawn right up close to where the white ‘stop’ line should be visible - but that line isn’t readily visible at all. Thus, when the lead motorist is someone who is unaware of this stops far enough back to have a comfortable view of the red traffic lights that he/she is waiting at, they do not trigger the sensor for waiting traffic....and the lights do not change. This situation usually causes a queue to build up steadily until frustrated motorists stuck behind (who are aware of the inadequacy of the traffic control system and faded/obscured road markings here) take their frustrations out on the motorist at the front of the queue, and/or the person at the front eventually jumps the red light (or people behind them swerve round at high acceleration). Once someone has jumped the red light the ‘change’ sequence is obviously started. So, people who are unfamiliar with the road beware - until these defects are rectified!
