Road gulley blocked, 23rd February

Fri, 23 Feb 2024 13:47:59 +0000
54.03349 -0.941771

Rainwater running down Kirk Balk Lane towards the crossroads is collected by a drain running across the road diagonally. With the recent rain and the erosion of the verges parts of the verge have washed into the drain blocking its outfall which would normally carry the water under the road into a drain diagonally opposite on the crossroads. The drain needs unblocking as there is constant flow across the road which in freezing conditions will turn the crossroads into an ice rink with serious potential consequences. The long term solution would be to kerb part of Kirk Balk Lane to prevent verge erosion and subsequent blockages. This has been a recurrent problem.

Blocked Drain Gulley, 3rd January

Wed, 03 Jan 2024 10:10:36 +0000
54.033566 -0.941705

The drain Gully (1st on the right) going up Kirk Balk Lane is blocked again causing water to flood across Main Street in Claxton. If it freezes, this could be a potential hazard to traffic & pedestrians. The problem is the mud & debris being washed down Kirk Balk Lane, could this be cleaned by a road sweeper which would help an enormous amount? I sweep the debris from the drains every morning during this bad period.

Flooding on Claxton crossroads, 5th December

Tue, 05 Dec 2023 09:53:00 +0000
54.033437 -0.94191

There is a blocked gulley at the end of Kirk Balk lane in Claxton causing a continuing torrent of water across the main road. During the day it’s not much of a problem but during the night when it freezes it could cause a serious accident when ice forms. Clearing the gully would solve the flowing water.

54.032236 -0.941203

The roadside gulley's and the pipework connecting them to the system to drain water from the road are blocked with silt. The chambers below the gulley's and the pipework need cleaning out. This was following heavy overnight rain. The photograph was taken at least 4 hours after the rain had stopped. I cleared any debris from the surface of all the gulley's but many were not taking any water down them.

Defective road surface, 30th December

Fri, 30 Dec 2022 15:10:26 +0000
54.032968 -0.943961

On Whinny Lane, Claxton there is a drain cover on the nearside of the road when travelling towards Main Street. The road surface prior to this cover has sunk and when you drive over it the surface rises to the drain cover causing your vehicle to be suddenly jolted and may cause suspension damage at anything other than very slow speeds. People who are familiar with the problem drive on the offside of the road to avoid it, putting them into the path of opposing traffic.

Icy road due to blocked drain, 14th January

Thu, 14 Jan 2021 16:49:57 +0000
54.033512 -0.941621

Roadside drain blocked, allowing large volumes of water to run across the road at the crossroads. When the water starts to freeze the crossroads will turn into a skating rink and vehicles approaching along Kirk Balk Lane and Whinney lane may not be able to stop at the give way lines and will enter the main road possible into the path of traffic along the main street, who will expect to have priority. Potential serious road accident may ensue. Open culvert on the opposite side of the road outside "Lawnswood" has pipework which is readily accessible and will allow the offending blockage to be jetted away and resolve the problem.

Roads/highways, 20th July

Sat, 20 Jul 2019 13:39:19 +0100
54.020823 -0.934551

This section of road is within the 30 mph limit . The white line (Hazzard Line - long line with short spaces) in the centre of the road has worn to such an extent that it is almost invisible. Vehicles entering Sand Hutton tend to do so at speeds above 30 mph and do so occupying part of the offside of the road, the wrong side of the white lines. On several occasions when I have been travelling from Sand Hutton towards Claxton vehicles travelling in the opposite direction have been cutting the corner and almost collided with my vehicle. Reinstatement of the white line would encourage drivers to stay on their correct side of the road and in doing so help to reduce their speed to 30 mph or less. Failure to repaint the white lines may result in a serious head on collision.
