Flooding, 30th November
I live in Malthouse Court, Thornham, in a property backing on to the A149. On the increasingly frequent occasions that we have heavy rainfall, a stream of muddy water pours down the Choseley Road across a slight bend, which obstructs visibility from both directions, and along the main road. Unfortunately, any leaves carried in the torrent quickly block up the drains and large puddles of liquid mud form (see attached photographs).
This mud seems to be particularly slippery ; two pedestrians have previously fallen over on a nearby pathway and, today, two vehicles approaching from opposite directions slewed dangerously across the A149 as they braked, having seen the large expanse of flooding late.
The stream causes access problems ,with residents at the bottom of the Choseley Road unable to enter their properties on foot, and a large pool forming in Green Lane which similarly obstructs pedestrians.
In addition, with vehicles frequently leave the village heading east at a speed which probably exceeds the 30 mph speed limit, they hit the pool stretching from the gutter half-way across the main road and send a wave of filthy water as much as 6 foot up the properties backing on to the road. Apart from the inconvenience of ending up with windows which cannot be seen through, all the buildings concerned are clad in chalk so some structural damage seems likely.
On a particularly wet and cold day, I have spent a large amount of time raking leaves off the drains to try to reduce the overall depth of the flooding. This is not pleasant, particularly when you are splashed by passing vehicles, and I would be interested to hear your suggestions for a long-term solution to this problem.
