Persistent leak in Oxford Road A4183, Abingdon, 7th May
Persistent leak in Oxford Road A4183, Abingdon
Water has been leaking up through the road for the last six years and the cause has been identified but no effective action taken.
British Telecom were working on both sides of the road recently and had had to pump out the chamber by the South Avenue bus stop (northbound). I explained that in times of heavy rainfall the water comes up through the BT manhole covers and they said that the ducts that carry the cables also act as the drainage system for the service. They suggested that the BT ducts are blocked, as had happened below the chamber they had had to pump out. The duct need clearing of the blockage.
It is pointless patching the road, all this does is cause the water to come up through the next section of tarmac as can be seen in the accompanying photographs. Unless the problem is properly cured there is little point in tar and chipping the road service to waterproof it as the water will still come up under the surface coating.
This problem and its cause has been reported many times.

Illegal soakaway with 5m of bld & under tree, 7th May
Last summer one of the property owners installed a soakaway in the rear garden taking water from the gutters of the building to the left hand side block of flats opposite the Peachcroft Christian centre and to the rear of property to the left hand set of flats.
I witnessed some of the building works and have since been advised that the soakaway should be beyond 5m from the buildings in the area and not under tree canopies and feel that after learning that the person who is responsible for this building work should have followed drainage best practice and didn’t and should be reprimanded and make good the surface water drainage in the area as the drainage is not generally good and is quite waterlogged generally in wet weather.
I report this issue under the understanding of complete anonymity as matters proceed.

Looks like someone has built something for rough sleeping here. Didn't see anyone around when we walked passed. Also litter left in the vicinity. Can someone check no one is there in need of assistance and have the items cleared?

Regular flooding on road after rain, 3rd May
Every time there is heavy or prolonged rain, this part of the road floods. A deep puddle halfway across the lane, deep enough that drivers spray it up onto the path used by walkers and cyclists, causing deep puddles there too where the surface is badly pitted. Could be a blocked drain?

Poison Hemlock growing by path used by schoolchildren, 1st May
Poison Hemlock is growing profusely again on the triangle of ground on corner of Sellwood Road and Northcourt Road. This needs killing and removing before it causes injury or goes to seed.
That triangle of ground is actually a cobbled area which bizarrely had imported soil put on it by Oxfordshire CC workmen when they were doing drainage repairs nearby. Ideally all the vegetation and solid should be removed to prevent the hemlock problem returning each year.

Cardboard boxes blown to streets, 30th April
I have witnessed numerous times where the cardboard boxes are blown on to peachcroft road in Abingdon. These are coming from behind the peachcroft shopping centre.
I think the shops need to be instructed to secure these boxes to avoid them blowing away onto nearby streets.
