Contractor vehicles obscuring/blocking road, 12th March
Re: Cattle Hill (between A359 and A371), Welham, Shepton Monatgue, Somerset.
As a regular user of Cattle Hill, Welham, I am aware of the works being done by Emily Estate, aka The Newt in Somerset, all along Cattle Hill. While it has become the norm to expect additional, sometimes erratic or inconsiderate driving by contractors in around the different sites, I feel I must bring to your attention an unacceptable hazard in the area of the archive facility at Welham Farm.
With the return to school of pupils at the 4 schools in Bruton and further afield, the road traffic in the area has returned to its normal pre-lockdown volume, potentially greater due to the current advice not to lift share. Farm traffic will also start to increase as the weather improves and groundwork recommences. However, the number of contractor's vehicles parked in the vicinity of Welham Farm has also increased considerably. These vehicles are parked nose-to-tail, which means that 2-way traffic is not permissible for a long stretch of road. Just today, there were 12 contractors vehicles parked on the roadside (yet just 5 in the field to the east of Welham House). On a straight, wide road, this would make passing difficult, but of course, this is a narrow country lane with a bend. It is incredibly difficult for drivers to see around the parked vehicles and beyond the bend to check for oncoming vehicles. (These vehicles have also scuffed mud from the verges into the road, adding to the danger.) There is no pull-in area should vehicles meet, as happened just this morning. As a road user, I believe this inconsiderate parking to be a hazard to other road users, and may result in an accident.
I have sent email requests to Emily Estate The Newt to request that they ensure contractors park with consideration (preferably properly off-road) for ALL road users, most of whom are locals and going about their essential journeys. I have received no reply.
