It benefits from excellent transport links, being well served by bus and train routes. Gawthorpe is a village near Ossett, with a population of around 500. It is the location of Gawthorpe Hall and is known mainly for the textiles industry, having once been an important centre of the trade.

WF16 is part of the Wakefield postcode area and covers a large area of approximately 11 square miles. It includes the villages of Gawthorpe, Chickenley, Flanshaw, Grange Moor, Scholes and Stanley. It also covers the towns of Earlsheaton, Ossett, Horbury and Wakefield city centre.

Residents of the WF16 postcode have access to a wide range of amenities including local shops, pubs and leisure centres. There are also a number of primary schools and two secondary schools within the area. The area is served by Wakefield Westgate railway station, with trains running to London. Motorists have direct access to the M1 motorway.

The area benefits from a mix of open spaces, such as Whelley Quarry, which is popular with climbers, walkers and cyclists. It also includes a section of the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The Association of Art and Antiques Dealers has a strong presence in the area, with hundreds of antiques and vintage related businesses located in the WF16 postcode.
