Ossett is a large town and a civil parish with a population of around 21,000. It is situated on the River Calder, near to Wakefield, Dewsbury and Leeds. It benefits from excellent transport links, being well served by bus and train routes. Gawthorpe is a village near Ossett, with a population of around 500. It is the location of Gawthorpe Hall and is known mainly for the textiles industry, having once been an important centre of the trade.
WF16 is part of the Wakefield postcode area and covers a large area of approximately 11 square miles. It includes the villages of Gawthorpe, Chickenley, Flanshaw, Grange Moor, Scholes and Stanley. It also covers the towns of Earlsheaton, Ossett, Horbury and Wakefield city centre.
