Taunton is the principal town and administrative centre for Taunton Deane borough, which is part of the Somerset County Council area. This is a growing town, located to the south of Bristol and the Mendips Hills. It is home to a variety of local businesses, such as shops, restaurants, and professional services.

Taunton is home to the county's main hospital and some of its biggest employers such as the MoD, and Npower's offices. It is also known for being the site of the famous 15th-century Castle and Somerset County Cricket Club, which is the oldest professional club still in playing today.

Some of the most notable locations in the TA3 postcode area are Vivary Park, a 19th-century landscaped park that is open to the public, the Somerset County Cricket Ground and the Taunton Racecourse.

The area also contains numerous other locations of historical and cultural interest, including the Somerset Tower in Taunton Castle, a late-medieval mound that was restored in Victorian times, and the interior of the 12th century St Andrews Church in Taunton.
