The area is further divided into numerous smaller post towns, such as Benfleet, Hadleigh, South Benfleet, Wolvesey, Canewdon, Thundersley, Prittlewell, Rayleigh, South Fambridge, Shotgate and Hawkwell.

The area of the postcode is largely residential, with a large number of residential neighbourhoods and housing estates situated within it. The postcode is predominantly home to a white British population, but also a number of other ethnic and national communities such as east Europeans, people of African, Asian and Caribbean descent and other English-speaking countries.

The postcode also encompasses some of the recreational and outdoor activities available in Southend-on-Sea. A large number of beaches are located along the postcode's coastline, including those of Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea, and Leigh-on-Sea. Two piers, the traditional Southend-on-Sea and the new 2.3km long Adventure Island, are both located within the SS8 postcode area. Further inland, a range of activities and attractions are available, featuring the Adventure Island theme park, Old Leigh's historic fishing village, Buckmore Park karting circuit, Eastwood Nurseries, and many more attractions and parks.

The SS8 postcode district is also renowned for being the home of several famous people, including footballer Jermain Defoe, actor Joanna Lumley and singer-songwriter Imogen Heap.
