PO12, which lies to the south of PO1, is a largely rural area, separated by the A27 motorway, which also marks the border with PO13. The rural scenery of PO12 consists of agricultural land and woodland, with the Southwick Country Park in the area.

The PO11 postcode district also inlcudes the Peterashne Industrial Estate, located on the north western edge of the PO11 district. The estate is home to a number of businesses, and is the main economic hub of the district, with a large number of people employed in and around the estate.

The coastline of PO11 forms a part of the Solent area, which includes the nearby beach towns of Hayling Island, Southsea and Hilsea. The area is an important destination for many tourists who visit Portsmouth each year, offering a variety of water sports and activities.

The city of Portsmouth and its neighbouring areas form an important part of the PO11 postcode district. It is regularly the main destination for commuters from around the Solent area, and is the home of some of the country's most prestigious universities and research institutions, such as the University of Portsmouth.
