The HU3 postcode was formed in 1974 when the new system of postal districts was introduced. It was made up of parts of the former HU1, HU2 and HU4 postcodes and originally covered an area that stretched from Anlaby as far east as Burstwick.

HU3 is home to the historic Old Town area of Hull as well as Hessle Foreshore and a large part of the city's docklands. The area also contains a number of new developments such as the Marina in Hull, a planned waterside development which includes apartments, shops, cafes and bars.

HU3 is a vibrant and diverse area of Hull. There are many different communities and cultures living in the area and the people in the postcode are well-served for schools, shops and amenities and there is good transport links to the city centre.

HU3 is also home to a number of parks, green spaces, and riverside walks, including the banks of the River Hull where waterfowl such as swans, geese, and ducks can often be seen.

HU3 residents also benefit from a range of leisure facilities such as the KCOM Stadium which is home to Hull City football club and the Humber Bridge which is the world's longest single-span suspension bridge.
