Uneven flag stones
14th November
Between Dean st and Middle Dean Street there is a carpark with a public walkway running between the streets named above. The flag stones are uneven and raised in places. My husband who is nearly 60, has tripped and fallen tonight. Hurting himself and ripping his jacket. These need relaying and making even to walk on

Urgent Need for Repairs and Upgrades to the Designated Car Parking Area Adjacent to Stainland Road
20th August
This same issue was reported 2 years earlier with no response or action taken from the council. The designated car parking area is currently in an unfit and inefficient condition, resulting in underuse by residents. Potholes, loose stones, and an uneven slope discourage vehicles from parking there, leading the majority of residents to park directly on Stainland Road instead.
Public Safety Concerns
This situation has created significant and growing risks for the local community:
Obstructed visibility: Vehicles parked on Stainland Road frequently block sightlines for drivers, making it difficult to see pedestrians crossing the road.
Increased danger to vulnerable groups: With a nearby school, many of the pedestrians are children. Additionally, elderly residents, who often rely on buses for transport, are placed at greater risk when navigating this busy road.
Traffic hazards: Stainland Road is already a heavily used route, with daily traffic including buses, tractors, horse riders, and regular commuter vehicles. Parked cars further narrow the road, creating congestion and unsafe manoeuvres.
Road narrowing hazard: Approximately 20 metres from the car park, the main road narrows significantly. With no traffic lights or right-of-way markings, vehicles travelling in opposite directions are forced either to wait for others to pass or attempt to squeeze through simultaneously. This often results in vehicles mounting the pavement to avoid collisions. The issue is especially problematic for larger vehicles such as buses and tractors. When cars are parked on the main road near this narrowing, the situation is exacerbated, greatly increasing the risk of accidents.
Benefits of Improvement
Investing in the repair and expansion of the car parking area would provide immediate and long-lasting improvements:
Enhanced public safety: Encouraging vehicles to park off the main road would reduce blind spots, protect pedestrians, and create a safer environment for all road users.
Improved traffic flow: Removing parked cars from Stainland Road would ease congestion, reduce the risks at the road-narrowing point, and ensure smoother passage for larger vehicles.
Better resident experience: A level, well-maintained surface would invite residents to use the facility rather than avoid it.
Long-term community benefit: A reliable, designated parking space would reduce reliance on on-street parking and contribute to a more orderly and accessible neighbourhood.
Conclusion
The current condition of the car park is not only inconvenient but poses an ongoing public safety risk, which is intensified by the road narrowing and lack of traffic control measures. By addressing the potholes, uneven ground, and lack of capacity, the council/association would significantly improve safety, ease congestion, and provide a practical, long-term solution for residents and road users alike.
