DY1 is bordered by several other postcode districts, namely: DY2 (Stourbridge/Wordsley/Wollaston) to the west, DY3 (Brierley Hill/Quarry Bank) to the south, DY4 (Tipton) to the east, and DY5 (Sedgley/Gornal) to the north. The area it covers is primarily residential but also includes some commercial, retail and industrial premises, as well as the borders of Dudley Zoo and Geopark.

The large town of Dudley, located approximately 4 miles west of Birmingham city centre, is the dominant post town in the DY1 postcode area. The district centre lies just east of the town centre, within which is Dudley Bus Station, a shopping centre, and various public facilities and amenities. Further east, the area comprises a mix of residential streets, educational facilities and other services, including Black Country Living Museum and Priory Park.

The DY1 postcode district contains several conservation areas, such as of Kinfauns, Bull Ring and Castle Street, and numerous listed buildings, including Borough Hall and the former Trinity Church. Being within commuting distance of Birmingham, the area has become popular among young professionals.

The area is served by public transport in the form of bus and railway services, as well as two train stations (at Dudley Port and Tipton) and a variety of bus routes operated mainly by National Express West Midlands. Buses also provide regular connections between all towns within the postcode district, while Dudley railway station offers direct services to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and other neighbouring towns.
