The postcode has a rich cultural and historic heritage. It is thought to have been first mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, when it was recorded as ‘Dorchestre'. Dorchester is home to a range of historic buildings, such as Tophill Castle and its associated manor house, as well as St Peter's Church and Maumbury Rings. Dorchester is also close to many other important historical sites, such as Maiden Castle and Poundbury, the latter being the planned town created by Prince Charles.
DT4 is geographically diverse with feature a mix of chalk downland, heaths, fields, woods, wetlands and coastal areas. This makes it an ideal area for nature enthusiasts with an abundance of flora and fauna to be seen. Sea-birds, deer, foxes, badgers and a variety of amphibians and reptiles can be observed in the area. It is also known for its interesting wildlife parks such as the SEA LIFE Centre at Weymouth and the Wolf Centre at Loders.
In terms of local amenities, DT4 boasts a great selection of shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and leisure activities. East and west Dorchester are home to an array of small independent shops and local suppliers, giving the area unique and homely charm. As well as this Dorchester also has a local market with a variety of goods on offer from crafts to fresh local produce. The Dorchester area is also known to host a diverse range of festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Dorchester Carnival, Dorchester Arts Festival and Weymouth Carnival.
In addition, DT4 is well served by transport links with direct services to London and Bristol just two hours away and the rest of Dorset well-connected with regular buses. Dorchester train station also provides non-stop services to Waterloo and London stations. Therefore, it is a great place to live, work and visit.
