BT1 covers an area which is made up of the majority of the city centre, including the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Titanic Quarter, elmwood hall and Belfast City Hall. It is the most populous district in the Belfast post town, and the second most populous district in Northern Ireland, encompassing a population of about 190,000 as of 2019.

The BT1 postcode is served by a variety of major bus routes operated by Translink, Belfast's public transport provider. It is also covered by a network of taxicab-based services and a variety of private hire vehicles. The area is served by a number of regular buses, which operate a variety of routes throughout Belfast and the surrounding areas.

The postcode is also linked to Belfast City Airport, which is situated in the area and is a major gateway into the Belfast region. The airport provides a broad range of destinations for both domestic and international flights.

BT1 is also home to a wide range of shops, restaurants and bars, making it a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. Retail outlets include major high street brands such as Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, John Lewis and Topshop, along with many independent stores located in the St George's market area as well as a number of cafés and restaurants.

Finally, the BT1 postcode is close to a number of cultural attractions, with the Ulster Museum, Belfast Botanic Gardens and Lyric Theatre just a few of the many facilities which can be found in the area.
