In the south of YO30 is the village of Thorpe-on-the-Hill, which is part of the district of Selby. The western border of YO30 coincides with the district of Ryedale, where residential areas of Askham Bryan, Skelton and Nether Poppleton can be found.

YO30 is a bustling area, with a variety of amenities and attractions. It contains a number of major shopping areas, including the Shambles and Coppergate Shopping Centre, as well as movie theatres and a multitude of popular bars and restaurants. In addition, several museums and places of historical interest can be found in YO30, including the York Minster and the York Castle Museum.

The area is well-connected, with a number of bus routes running through YO30 and a direct train service to London Kings Cross from York railway station. The postcode also benefits from a variety of leisure activities, including tennis, golf, fitness, bowls, cricket and a range of water-based activities. Furthermore, several parks are located in YO30, including the Knavesmire and Rowntree Park.
