This rural settlement is located on the banks of the River Tweed and it is home to a few shops as well as a pub and restaurant. Other villages in the area are Newtown, Hassendean, Gattonside, Drygrange, and Newstead.

The primary school for the postcode area is St Boswells Primary School in the village of St Boswells. There are several other schools in Melrose and the surrounding area, plus numerous leisure centres and sports centres. The TD2 postcode district is served by regular bus services to nearby towns and cities, such as Edinburgh and Galashiels, while the closest railway station is Tweedbank, located 4 miles away in Galashiels.
