SP4 POSTCODE REGION

Salisbury (SP4)

The SP4 postcode area is located in the Salisbury postcode town region, within the county of Wiltshire, and contains a total of 1309 individual postcodes.

There are 52 electoral wards in the SP4 postcode area, including Andover, Fordingbridge, Gillingham, Salisbury, Shaftesbury, Tidworth which come under the local authority of the Wiltshire Council.

Combining the whole postcode region, 26% of people in SP4 are classed as having an AB social grade, (i.e. 'white-collar' middle-upper class), compared to 27% across the UK.

This does not mean that the people of SP4 are poorer than other areas, but it may give an indication that there are areas of deprivation.

The SP4 postcode covers parts of Wiltshire and Dorset, comprising the towns of Amesbury, Boscombe Down, Durrington, Laverstock, Larkhill, Nomansland, Shrewton, Tidworth and Upavon. It is part of the Salisbury postcode area, which is subdivided into over 20 postcode districts including SP4.

The town of Amesbury lies within the postcode area, which is most famously associated with the nearby Stonehenge monument. Stonehenge, one of Britain's greatest mysteries, is thought to be of either Neolithic or Bronze Age origin and is maintained as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is thought to have been built over 5,000 years ago, and today it draws tourists from all over the world.

In addition to Stonehenge, Amesbury is also home to a number of interesting historic sites, including Old Sarum, the remains of the Iron Age hill fort that had been used by Salisbury's first settlers, and the No.1 British Army Hospital, built in the 18th century to provide medical care for soldiers during the Seven Years' War.

The Boscombe Down area of SP4 includes a RAF base and is home to the Defence Test Evaluation Organisation, which operates an advanced flight-test centre for aircraft safety and performance evaluation.

The towns of Durrington, Laverstock, and Shrewton are all small villages, with most of their population employed in local farming and agriculture. Nomansland is a smaller village that was recently saved from development when its residents and local councils won a planning appeal.

The largest town served by the SP4 postcode is Tidworth, which is home to extensive military training grounds, including the Tidworth and Bulford Barracks, which host a number of army facilities.

The town of Upavon lies behind Salisbury Plain and houses a large pipe factory as well as a wetland nature reserve, with a number of rare species of birds and insects being spotted there.

SP4 is an area steeped in history and of great importance to the Army and to Britain's tourism industry, not least for its proximity to Stonehenge. Its villages offer a glimpse into traditional rural life, whilst its towns provide modern amenities and facilities, making it an attractive postcode area for both those looking for a leisurely country escape or a base from which to explore the area's rich history.
