The BB4 postcode area has an estimated population of 32,400 and is home to many notable landmarks, such as Stansfield Tower, a 14th century sandstone fortress, and Peel Tower, a 125-foot-tall structure built in 1848 to commemorate Lancashire's political reformer Robert Peel.

The BB4 postcode is mainly rural, with many small towns and villages, but is well connected to other parts of Lancashire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire.

The areas economy is principally based on the textile industry, with two cotton mills located in Whitworth and Bacup, which have been in operation since the 19th century. There are also a number of smaller businesses set up in some of the villages in the postcode area.

The BB4 postcode has recently seen an increase in housebuilding, with many new developments taking place in some of the more rural areas. However, this has also caused some tension between existing residents who fear the changes will have a negative effect on the area's character.

The area of BB4 is a mix of industrial and agricultural landscapes, as well as providing many recreational and leisure opportunities. The area is renowned for its scenic walks, with the Pennine Bridleway running through the area. There are also reserves and wildlife centres, including Ogden Nature Reserve in Haslingden, and several reservoirs and lakes.
