The area is characterised by the rural landscapes and open moorlands that dominate its terrain. Appleton-le-Moors is notable for having the largest area of drystone walling in the North of England and together with Lastingham provides some excellent walks through the unspoiled countryside.

Education is particularly well provided for in DL10, with Pickering having its own secondary school and further options nearby in Malton as well as numerous primary schools. In addition, there are ample public amenities within the area, such as libraries and recreational parks.

The area has a strong sense of community and hosts a range of annual events, such as the Pickering 1940s weekend which takes place in September. It is also becoming increasingly popular with residents and visitors due to its convenient location, with easy access to both the coast and surrounding cities.

It has a range of attractions to suit all ages, various modern amenities and educational facilities, combined with unspoiled moorlands and stunning natural surroundings.
