The postcode is bordered to the north by the KA15 postcode, to the east by the KA10 postcode, to the south by the KA14 postcode and to the west by the KA5 postcode.

Kilmarnock is the largest town in the KA9 area and is an important regional centre for shopping, banking and entertainment. It has a large variety of shops and restaurants, as well as a bustling night life. It is also home to Kilmarnock Football Club, which plays in the Scottish Premier League.

The villages in the KA9 area are much smaller than Kilmarnock and are mainly residential. Crookedholm is a small village on the banks of the Lugar Water, with a few shops and a pub.

The village of Hurlford is a mile and a half north of Kilmarnock and is the centre of the whisky-making industry in Scotland. Two of the most well-known whiskies to come out of Hurlford are The Famous Grouse and Glenmorangie.

The village of Dunlop is located about half a mile east of Kilmarnock and is home to a museum of early printing. It is also home to an historic country house, the Dunlop House, which is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Moving further into the KA9 postcode is the village of Stewarton. Although not as well known as Hurlford or Dunlop, it is a thriving and picturesque village on the banks of the River Irvine. It has a wide variety of shops and entertainment including a cinema, bingo hall and a theatre.

Lastly, the village of Fenwick is located on the outskirts of Kilmarnock. It is a largely rural area and has a great variety of wildlife, including the red squirrel, which is now confined to just a few places in Scotland. The area is also home to one of Scotland's oldest golf courses, Kilmarnock Golf Club.
