In terms of industry, the locals are largely employed by the manufacturing sector as well as the retail and service industries. There are a number of prominent employers in the area including Kraft Foods and Ultra Electronics Communications.

The area also plays an important part in Welsh culture and language, as it is the birthplace of some of the country's most iconic figures such as poet Vernon Watkins and screenwriter of the movie Watership Down, Richard Adams. The area is also home to the world's oldest surviving Welsh language radio station, BBC Radio Cymru.
