The area is primarily a residential area with most of the population living in small villages and townships. There are a few large industrial plants mostly located near Cardenden. Shopping facilities are available in Cardenden, Kingseat, Thornton and Leslie.

The area is served by two schools - Lochgelly Primary School and St. Kenneth's Primary School. Several hospitals are located in and around the KY2 postcode. The nearest hospital to the area is Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. There are also some medical centres and clinics located in Cowdenbeath, Cardenden, Kelty, Thornton and Kingseat.

Apart from the above mentioned facilities, KY2 postcode has excellent sports and recreational activities available for its residents. There are two golf courses in the area - Cardenden Golf Club and Leslie Golf Club. Braid Hills in Edinburgh is the nearest ski resort to KY2 postcode. There are also numerous parklands, playgrounds and parks located in the area, including Longhaugh Park, Kingseat Park, Richardson Park, Geenillford Park and Woodmuir Park.

In addition, KY2 postcode area is home to some historical sites. Balgarvie Castle near Cardenden is a 14th-century castle. Berryhillock is an 18th-century mansion featuring a beautiful garden. Lochore Castle and Auchterderran Castle are other notable historic places situated within the area.
