It is also home to the Royal Archive of Scotland in East Wemyss. The postcode district is also home to many outdoor leisure activities, such as golf courses, horseback riding, caravan parks, and the Fife Coastal Path.

KY12 is part of Fife Council and is covered by two constituencies: Cowdenbeath and Fife North East. It is represented by Councillors from the Labour and Liberal Democrats parties, as well as one Councillor for the Scottish Conservatives. It is situated approximately 15 miles from the city of Edinburgh, and 10 miles from the town of Dunfermline.

The postcode is served by a number of bus routes, as well as a railway segment linking Cardenden to Cowdenbeath, and another linking Benarty to Lochgelly. In terms of transport infrastructure, the area is served by the A907, A915, and A917 roads.

In terms of education, this postcode district is served by post-primary educational institutions such as Glenwood High School, Lochgelly High School, and Cardenden Primary School. In terms of higher education, the area is within close proximity to the University of Dundee, as well as the University of St Andrews.

KY12 is known for its vibrant shops and eateries, making it popular among both locals and visitors. It is also home to several cultural sites, such as the Lochgelly Centre theatre and Vanhooley Art Gallery. The area is also home to many historical sites, such as St. Ann's Church and West Wemyss Heritage Trail, as well as the home of the renowned physicist James Clerk Maxwell, which is now open to the public.
