Kilmarnock is a post-industrial town that has since seen a regeneration. It is the principal settlement in East Ayrshire and is at the heart of the Irvine Valley, which is bounded to the south by the River Irvine and to the north by the River Garnock. It has a population of nearly 48,000 people and is mainly known for its strong engineering and manufacturing industries.

The KA16 postcode district lies within the Kilmarnock constituency, which is represented in the House of Commons by the Labour Member of Parliament, Alan Brown. Aside from local businesses, the area also contains Kilmarnock F.C., the 3rd oldest professional football club in Scotland, who play at Rugby Park Stadium, just outside of the district.
