HU6 is mainly a residential area, mainly comprising of terraced housing and low-rise flats. It has a population of 24,719 according to the 2011 census, with 5,087 households. The most common types of employment were manufacturing and retail.

The area is served by the bus services run by East Yorkshire Motor Services, including the 20, 98 and 99 routes, all of which link HU6 to the city centre, providing access to the area's shops, entertainment and services. The East Yorkshire Railway opended a 3.8 mile branch line in 1901 connecting the Junction to Beverley and Hull, which operated until 1992. The nearest railway station is Hull Paragon, which is about 4.5 miles away from HU6.

Education is provided by the local schools in the area, such as Kingswood Academy, Malet Lambert School and Bransholme Primary School. In terms of leisure, there are a variety of sports clubs and leisure centres including football, cricket, hockey, sailing, golf, fishing and bowls. The area is home to the Hull City Council Sports Village, which has a pool, gym and other facilities.

The area also has two local neighbourhood policing teams, Orchard park and Bransholme, who work together to tackle anti-social behaviour and provide crime prevention advice. They also provide a wide range of other services, such as victim support and domestic violence support.

Residents of HU6 are able to access a variety of services from the local hospital, Hull Royal Infirmary, which is located nearby. The area is home to many national retailers such as Asda and Tesco, as well as convenience stores, pubs, cafes and takeaways.
