The area is also home to some of Scotland's finest scenery. In the south, there are rolling hills and expansive moorland. Up in the north, the River Sark meanders through woodland and has spectacular views of the plains of Annandale.

In terms of housing, the area is mostly made up of detached or semi-detached homes as well as some terraced housing. Prices vary depending on location but generally remain below the national average.
