The postcode heavily encompasses Normanton, one of Derby's oldest suburbs. Normanton is steeped in history, with many buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries surviving in the area. Notable landmarks include St Faith's Church, a Grade II listed building from the 12th century, and the Normanton and Ratcliffe Viaduct, still in use to this day as a railway bridge. Normanton also has several recreational parks, shopping facilities, and leisure amenities.

The postcode also covers parts of the Derbyshire countryside, most notably an area known as Little Eaton, located on the west side of Derby. Although rural and quaint, Little Eaton has lots to offer its visitors, ranging from golf courses and nature reserves to a range of independent shops and cafes.

Pear Tree, a smaller but much newer suburb of Derby, is also covered by the DE22 postcode. It is situated around two miles southeast of the city centre, and is home to a selection of modern properties, retail parks, schools, medical services, places of worship, and leisure facilities.

Spondon, another village within the DE22 vicinity, is well known for its historic buildings such as Spondon Hall and St Werburgh's Church. Other attractions in the area include a range of recreational facilities, a cinema complex, shops, restaurants, bars and pubs.
