The city's theatre, the Sands Centre, holds a wide variety of events including music, theatre, comedy, and film. Its history can be explored in its three main museums.

The nearby village of Thursby sits just west of the city on the banks of the River Caldew and has an attractive village green with a stream running through it. Its further attractions include a nature reserve nearby, Thurso Castle, and a range of walking trails, pubs and restaurants. Greysouthen is a small village that lies south of the town of Carlisle and has a wooded area, the Greysouthen Valley and nearby Shap Beck Farm.

Highlaws village lies to the east of Carlisle and offers a range of amenities, including a village shop, post office and a pub. The village is surrounded by a number of scenic walking trails plus the nearby cultural attraction of Rose Castle. The neighbouring villages of Beckfoot and Kirkandrews on Eden are situated to the east and south of Carlisle respectively. Beckfoot is a picturesque village and Kirkandrews on Eden includes the Country Park at Byremill Wood, a collection of archaeological sites and a number of walking trails.

The postcode also covers the large market town of Wigton. This vibrant and traditional market town offers a range of shops and independent stores, as well as the weekly livestock market, an Olympic sized swimming pool, sports centre and a large park, Sizergh Park, with stunning views of the Lake District.
