The area is served by Carlisle Airport, which opened in 1964 and is located a few miles south of the city. It has recently been upgraded to handle half-a-million passengers a year.

The area's climate is generally characterised by mild summers and can be very cold in winter months. Average precipitation is relatively high, and Carlisle is often subject to wind and occasional flooding, particularly in the Solway coastline areas.

In terms of recreation, there are plenty of activities to pursue for all ages in the CA27 postcode region. From the Fellwalking and rock climbing in the Lakes to cycling through the Solway, to the more sedate activities of birdwatching, golfing and fishing, there's something for everyone. There are also plenty of opportunities for shopping, both in Carlisle city centre and along the Solway coast.
