The area saw settlement in the early stages of the development of Birmingham as a manufacturing hub in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are a number of historical and cultural attractions in the area, including the ruins of an early 19th-century brewery, known as the ‘Dudley Wood Brewery', which has been preserved and is now open to the public as a museum.
The B47 postcode is served by the Birmingham Cross-City Line with regular direct rail services to central Birmingham and other suburban neighbourhoods. In addition, the Birmingham–Worcester Canal runs through the area, connecting it to a wider network of waterways. This makes Northfield a popular destination for leisure activities such as walking, fishing and cycling.
Northfield has a strong cultural identity, and hosts several annual community events - including a local music festival, street markets, and an illuminated carnival which is celebrated around the time of the Summer Solstice.
The area is characterised by green spaces and tree-lined streets, with an abundance of parks, open spaces and nature reserves to explore. Furthermore, Northfield is also home to multiple businesses, with a lively mix of shops and eateries. It is also home to Birmingham City University's Northfield campus, located in the centre of the suburb.
