BT49 is part of the East Antrim constituency, and its major industry is agriculture, specifically cattle rearing and dairying. As such, it is considered to be the dairy heartland of Northern Ireland, producing over 70% of the province's total dairy output. The Postcode area also includes a number of dairy farms, including Kilbride Farm (the largest dairy farm in Northern Ireland).

BT49 is also home to a number of important attractions, such as the National Trust property of Kinbane Castle, located in Ballintoy. It is also home to the world-famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, and the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which contains a number of scenic trails and walks.

Other notable attractions in BT49 include the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust, the Wolfe Tones GAA Club, and the Adair Arms hotel, which is located in Ballymena. The area also has a number of golf courses, such as the Ballymena Golf and Country Club, and the Kinbane golf course.

The postcode area has excellent transport links, with Belfast International Airport being just 20 miles away, and Belfast City Airport just 30 miles away. Belfast is also easily accessible by rail, with a number of direct services to London, Liverpool, Glasgow and Dublin available from the area.
